Caring for their first smiles with patience and trust

Dental care for babies, children and teenagers in a friendly environment, respecting each child’s pace and needs.

Children’s dentistry cares for oral health from the first months of life to adolescence. It aims not only to treat problems, but to prevent them, support growth and build a calm relationship with the dentist.

At Centre Dental Vilanova, we adapt language, time and working methods to each child’s age and personality. Cooperation develops gradually, without rushing and with family involvement.

When should the first visit take place?

A first assessment is recommended during the first year of life or when the first tooth appears. It guides families on hygiene, diet, fluoride, dummies, breastfeeding and decay prevention.

Subsequent review intervals depend on each child’s risk. Visiting before pain develops helps make early experiences simpler and more positive.

Prevention from an early age

Regular check-ups

We monitor eruption, jaw development, hygiene, decay risk and habits affecting the mouth.

Hygiene education

We teach children and families age-appropriate brushing and explain when an adult should help or supervise.

Professional fluoride

May be applied in the clinic when decay risk warrants it. Concentration and frequency are decided individually.

Fissure sealants

Protective layers applied to the grooves of selected molars to reduce plaque build-up and decay risk.

Advice on habits

We advise on diet, sugary drinks, dummy use, thumb sucking, mouth breathing and other oral health habits.

Treatments we provide

  • Check-ups and decay prevention.
  • Fillings in primary and permanent teeth.
  • Pulp treatment in primary teeth when indicated.
  • Space maintenance after premature tooth loss.
  • Assessment and treatment of dental injuries.
  • Extractions when a tooth cannot be preserved.
  • Monitoring eruption and growth.
  • Assessment for interceptive orthodontics.

Baby teeth matter for chewing, speech, maintaining space and guiding eruption. Decay in a primary tooth needs assessment even though it will eventually fall out.

Supporting children who fear the dentist

Fear may arise from previous experiences, things a child has heard or an unfamiliar setting. We aim to build trust gradually.

  • Brief, age-appropriate explanations.
  • Positive, understandable language.
  • Gradual introduction to the environment and instruments.
  • Familiarisation visits when needed.
  • Positive reinforcement and respect for the child’s signals.
  • Family involvement following professional guidance.

Not every child will be calm at the first visit. Some need more time, several appointments or additional measures according to age and treatment.

Dental injuries

Falls and blows are common in childhood. If a tooth fractures, moves or is lost, contact the clinic as soon as possible, even if there is no pain.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out

Find it, hold it by the crown without touching the root, do not scrub it and contact a dentist immediately. If possible, keep it in milk or an advised medium until instructions are received. A baby tooth must not be replanted.

After the injury

Some complications develop later, so reviews and follow-up radiographs may be needed even if the tooth appears fine.

Interceptive orthodontics and growth

Check-ups may detect crossbites, lack of space, eruption problems or habits affecting development. Some benefit from treatment during growth; others only need monitoring.

When indicated, we coordinate orthodontic assessment and explain the appropriate time to act to the family.
